Supporting your child through illness naturally

·6 min read

Children respond beautifully to homeopathic care. Here's how to use homeopathy safely and effectively for common childhood complaints.

Children are some of the most rewarding patients in homeopathic practice. Their vital force is strong, their cases are often clear and uncomplicated, and they respond quickly and beautifully to the right remedy. As a parent, having some knowledge of homeopathy can make a real difference to how you navigate the inevitable illnesses of childhood.

The most important principle when using homeopathy for children is to match the remedy to the child, not just the illness. Two children with ear infections may need completely different remedies based on how they are experiencing it — one may be screaming and inconsolable (Chamomilla), another may be clingy and weepy (Pulsatilla), another may be restless and fearful (Aconite).

For fevers, the most important thing to remember is that fever is not the enemy. A fever is the immune system working. Rather than immediately reaching for something to bring it down, observe your child carefully. Are they drinking? Are they rousable? Are they in distress? A child who is feverish but still interactive and drinking is generally managing well. Homeopathic remedies can support the body through a fever without suppressing it.

For coughs and colds, Aconite at the very first sign of illness, Ferrum Phos in the early stages, and then more specific remedies as the picture becomes clearer — Bryonia for a dry, painful cough, Pulsatilla for thick yellow discharge and a clingy child, Drosera for a spasmodic barking cough.

For digestive upsets, Nux Vomica for overindulgence or stress-related complaints, Arsenicum Album for gastro with anxiety and restlessness, Colocynthis for cramping colic that is better from pressure.

Always seek medical attention if you are concerned about your child, if a fever is very high or prolonged, if they are not drinking, or if they seem very unwell. Homeopathy is a wonderful complement to good medical care, not a replacement for it.
